Isco: Is There a Role for the Playmaker in Ancelotti's Ideal Real Madrid ?
The money that Real Madrid are investing in grass roots football in Spain is truly admirable. There should be medals awarded, it is all so humbling and moving. €30 million was handed over to Real Sociedad (and seven for the tax man) for Asier Illarramendi, a footballer with just a couple of half decent seasons under his belt. Malaga also pocketed €30 million for Isco in what feels like a whim as Real Madrid do not really need the playmaker.
The fact that there is still a debate over what Isco will do and where at the Santiago Bernabeu club indicates that the transfer may not have been the most logical by Florentino Perez. But hey ho, Isco is not going anywhere now and coaches have lost their posts at Madrid for not fielding the president’s favourite.
Ideally, Isco should be slotted in behind the striker as a poking, probing playmaker. That is where the footballer can really show his fanciest football as done for Valencia, Malaga and the Spanish international youth ranks. However, Mesut Ozil plays in that role very effectively. In fact, there are few finer players in the world in this position. Kaka also favors that role, a footballer over twice as expensive as Isco but still rattling around the club’s dressing room.
Carlo Ancelotti has already tested the 21-year-old “in-the-hole” behind the striker in preseason friendlies and Isco looked fine and dandy there. One would hope so, too. The problem is that this tactic forced the imperious Ozil out to the right hand side, where the German is as effective on the pitch as a TV stand. Ozil’s appearance on that flank in turn stuck Angel di Maria on the bench and made the team lose a little bit of dynamism and shooting power from distance that the Argentinean winger can offer.
Isco has also been known to hang around on the left in a front three formation in previous incarnations. Fortunately, that 4-3-3 setup is one that Real Madrid favored under Mourinho. It still lingered in parts during the three friendlies so far under the club’s new Italian manager. The issue with shifting Isco over to this flank is that the spot is taken up by Cristiano Ronaldo. The Portuguese footballer is quite a decent player on a good day and thus difficult to relegate to the bench, di Maria-style.
A placement in the creative centre of the park would leave Isco too far away from the action up front and would use up a spot pencilled in for Xabi Alonso Luka Modric or the aforementioned Illarramendi.
Tactical necessity has not always been a priority for the Madrid president in his signings, so working out where and how Ancelotti will use Isco is possibly a misplaced use of time. The new acquisition already fits the bill on three fronts for Real Madrid in the club’s attempt to give the Santiago Bernabeu a more local feel. Isco is marketable, Spanish and set to be a leading international for years to come. For the moment, that is more than enough for Real Madrid, no matter where Isco ends up on the pitch.

Bale would be a good signing for Real Madrid, says Isco
Isco feels that Tottenham winger Gareth Bale would be a good addition for Real Madrid if the Welshman were to make the move to the Liga giants.
Bale trained this week as Spurs chairman Daniel Levy met with Madrid counterpart Florentino Perez to negotiate a transfer, although Perez has balked at the 24-year-old's £100 million pricetag.
Former Malaga man Isco believes Bale would prove a worthwhile addition to the squad, although he was quick to highlight the depth of quality already at coach Carlo Ancelotti's disposal.
"The team is really balanced but if Bale comes he would be another plus, which is never a bad thing," Isco told the official Madrid website.
"He’s a great player. I think we already have a solid team, but he would be a good reinforcement."
The attacking midfielder then went on to voice his satisfaction with the way he has adapted to life at the Santiago Bernabeu following his €30m (£25m) move this summer.
"Everything’s been going really well. I adapted fairly quickly and my team-mates have helped me loads," he added. "There’s a really good vibe and we have to keep it that way."
Real Madrid 3-0 Inter:
Carlo Ancelotti's men prepare for their La Liga kick-off next weekend in perfect fashion with a comfortable win against the Nerazzurri in the US
Real Madrid coasted to victory as they turned on the style in a 3-0 victory over an unspiring Inter at the Edward Jones Dome in St. Louis, America.
Carlo Ancelotti's men were rarely threatened as strikes from Kaka, Ronaldo and the outstanding Casemiro saw them post an easy victory against their Italian opponents, who look to be in for another tough season in Serie A under new boss Walter Mazzarri.
Inter started the brighter and Rodrigo Palacio was almost clean through on goal in only the second minute. Andrea Ranocchia's hopeful clearance ballooned beyond the Real backline and was read by the Argentine forward who was only denied the chance to open the scoring by his failure to control the high ball as it came over his shoulder - an alert Diego Lopez saving his defenders’ blushes as he raced out to collect the loose ball.
Real Madrid soon assumed control of the match and through Kaka and the impressive Casemiro, los Blancos began to create a number of opportunities.
Both Morata and Angel Di Maria had half chances inside the opening 10 minutes. The Spanish Under-21 striker was inches away from connecting with a Kaka cross from the right and the Argentine fluffed his lines when set up by the same player just 12-yards out.
Eventually the Brazilian Kaka took it upon himself to open the scoring, although he needed a slight reprieve himself to do so.
Chesting down a cross from fellow Brazilian Casemiro, the former AC Milan playmaker saw his first effort blocked by Samir Handanovic in the Inter goal. However the giant Slovenian could only watch as Kaka reacted quickest to the loose ball to send a diving header into the bottom corner and put Real Madrid in front.
Carlo Ancelotti’s men continued to press forward and Cristiano Ronaldo sent a couple of efforts wide of both posts as he attempted to outfox Handanovic from range.
It was from closer quarters though that Ronaldo did eventually double Madrid’s lead, latching onto Casemiro’s smart through-ball and smashing an effort across an outstretched Handanovic and into the far corner to strengthen Real’s grip on the match just before the break.
The signs were just as ominous for the Nerazzurri at the start of the second half as their opponents almost started the second half the way they had ended the first as Di Maria rattled the crossbar less than 60 seconds after the restart.
Chances began to try up for Ancelotti’s men and Inter almost found away back into the game as the unlikely partnership of Ranocchia and Palacio linked up once more. This time the Argentine striker was able to take down the defenders giant clearance, but his finishing let him down on this occasion, curling his effort wide of Lopez’s goal when he really should have hit the target.
Real Madrid did eventually make it three though as Casemiro claimed the final touch on Di Maria’s deep corner, although replays suggested the final touch may have come off of an Inter defender.

Augsburg 0-4 Borussia Dortmund: Aubameyang hits hat-trick on dream Bundesliga debut
Borussia Dortmund kicked off the Bundesliga season in style with a comfortable victory over Augsburg.
Summer signing Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang grabbed a hat-trick and was a constant threat at the SGL Arena, becoming the sixth player in Bundesliga history to net a treble on his debut.
A Robert Lewandowski penalty with just five minutes remaining capped the rout for the visitors.
Augsburg put in a workmanlike performance but failed to trouble the Dortmund defence on many occasions.
And it was Jurgen Klopp's men who almost made the perfect start in the opening minute when a Kevin Grosskreutz long ball ricocheted into the path of Aubameyang.
The striker ran down the right and played the ball into the path of Lewandowski, but the Pole’s effort was blocked by Jan-Ingwer Callsen-Bracker.
But Markus Weinzierl's side were not overawed and pressed their opponents high up the pitch, going close through debutant Halil Altintop’s first-time volley, although it went wide of goal.
The Bavarian side's gutsy plan came undone, however, as the visitors broke the deadlock.
Marcel Schmelzer received the ball on the left before delivering an exquisite lofted cross straight into the six-yard box where Aubameyang stole away from his marker to finish with a low, diving header.
However, Augsburg's Raphael Holzhauser went close twice shortly before the break as an effort was cleared off the line, before Mitchell Langerak, in goal for the suspended Roman Weidenfeller, strongly palmed away the Austrian’s 30-yard effort.
Dortmund almost doubled their lead five minutes after the restart. Holzhauser's pass was intercepted and the away side launched a swift counter-attack.
The ball was moved to Aubameyang and the Gabon international strode into the box to fire an effort towards the near post but was only denied by a good save from Mohamed Amsif.
However, he was not to be denied moments later.
Reus took ownership of the ball in the middle of the opposition half and slid a well-timed through-ball into the path of Aubameyang, and the new-boy coolly slotted his effort across the goalkeeper into the far corner.
It got better for the forward as with 10 minutes remaining, Aubameyang sprung the offside trap to latch onto a Lewandowski through-ball before rounding Amsif and firing into the empty net.
Lewandowski completed the rout from the penalty spot following Jan-Ingwer Callsen-Bracker's foul on Jonas Hofmann to cap-off a satisfying open-day victory for Dortmund.
